Artists Statement The animal imagery began in my quilting effort to built my own world. I
was living in an urban area of Chicago and felt very bound
by the city. But thinking sometimes can be the best way to
travel. I found nature within myself and stitched it into my
quilts. I found I had the need for the swiftness of heron
wings, and the splash of the frog pond. What I didn't have
where I lived, I manufactured for myself from hand - dyed
cotton, organza and thread.
Now that I have moved to the Indiana Dunes area, I find my
work growing like the wilderness in my garden. I garden much
the same way as I quilt. Nothing exceeds like excess. My new
work reflects the abundance of the wild. I have always seen
myself and the people around me in my animals, fish and
fins, feathers and scales. I see them dancing through the
checks and balances of societies. I work largely in animal
imagery that springs out of my spiritual well. My colors
reflect that natural world. But I've come to know that the
animals represent people around myself.
Biography
Ellen has spent most of her life teaching, writing or working with
fabric and now she 's come to a point where all occupations
blend. She grew up in Streator, IL and went to Knox College
in Galesburg, IL and did some graduate studies at Boston
University. She began quilting in response to a gift
from a neighbor who saved a quilt top from one of her
mother's cleaning fits, and gave it to her, quilted, once
she was grown. It was such an inspiration that she has been
quilting ever since. She currently teaches for quilt guilds
and conferences across the country, a series of fiber art
courses called Thread Magic, covering all kinds of machine
embroidery techniques for quilters. She lives at her studio
in the Indiana Dunes with four cats: Ivy Gray Grace, Ariane
Growltiger, Nyamoto of the Iron Paw and Hercule Pirot,
detective way under cover.
She also has three greyhounds: Sir Robert Beauregaurd and
Carra, Candace Canis and Bedelia Birdy Buttercup, all of
whom are very involved with Ellen's work and have long taken
over quality control.
Her book " Thread Magic- The Enchanted World of Ellen
Anne Eddy " is currently available through Quilting
Arts. She has written for numerous fiber art publications,
including Quilting Arts, American Quilter and Quilter's
Newsletter, Threads and Fiber Arts.

Resume
Ellen Anne Eddy is a fiber artist whose embroidered wall
tapestries defy the concept of quilting tradition, using
exquisite hand - dyed colors and intricate patterns of
machine stitchery, her work elevates reconstructed fiber
into a fine art medium. Her designs are drawn from a
mingling of the natural world with her dreams and personal
visions. Using hand - dyed fabrics, lames, machine
embroidery, appliqué and layered sheers, she creates the
illusion of ice, running water, mist and flame. She peoples
her worlds with both real and imaginary life. The most
outstanding feature of Ellen's work is the embroidery.
Intricate stitching describes life in micro and macrocosm.
Fish and bugs, lizards and birds weave in and out of the
pattern. Frogs and cats sing to the night. A cat-fish swims
in silent splendor. Salamanders bask in the heat. Her works
are vibrant and full of energy.
