Artists Statement
" ART....is IDEAS"
If you have an idea that you can convey to someone , or
the masses, by means of oil on canvas, ,watercolor,
sculpture, drawing, sewing, quilting, etc, and they in
turn, appreciate the beauty, or m essage in it, you are
entitled to be called an artist.

John A. Sowles is a native of Northwest Indiana and has
been home-based in Crown Point for the last 41 years.
John has studied in various seminars at major advertising
companies as well as attending the American Academy of Art
in Chicago, Illinois and has a total of 52 years as a sign
artist, 43 of those years as a Master Sign Artist.
John has experience in many facets of the field of art
including hand lettering, painted pictorials and fine art,
murals, decorative art on any number of surfaces and
textures, glass etching and glue chipping, angel gilding on
glass, gold leaf and powder gilding, pencil and charcoal
drawings, acrylic and oil paintings( including portraits),
and the Norwegian decorative art of Rosemaling.
Although John is obviously an artist who works well in
many different media, his emphasis and his specialty is in
fine art and murals. He can travel anywhere in the world,
but is currently home-based in the greater Chicago area and
Northern Indiana. He is still very active in sign designing
and painting, full or part wall and ceiling murals and
related items such as trompe l'oeil, pictorial art,
portraits and decorative art for hire.
John manages " Backyard Studio" from his home base in
Crown Point, Indiana. He also travels to accommodate clients
from as far away as Florida and California.
